Etosha National Park map

This is a popular day-trip starting from Swakopmund. We take you early in the morning in a light aircraft and fly low level over the Spitzkoppe past Omaruru over the interior to Mokuti Lodge Airstrip. On the eastern side of Etosha The Etosha Pan covers some 4731 km2.

At its widest point it is approximately 110km by 60km. The pan is mostly dry except after heavy rains when it floods mainly from the Ekuma and Oshigabo rivers in the north. In the east Fischer Pan is fed from the Omuthiya and Omuramba-Owambo rivers. Of the 114 mammals species found in the park, several are rare and endangered, such as black rhino, cheetah and black-faced impala.

The latter is endemic to northwestern Namibia and southwestern Angola. Etosha’s current population of more then 600 black rhino represents one of the few growing populations of black rhino in the world. Etosha’s elephants are reputed to be of the largest in Africa, the tallest ones, measuring up to 4 m at the shoulder. Other large mammals represented in the park include giraffe, blue wildebeest, mountain and plains zebra, hyena and lion. Cheetah and leopard complete the trio of “big cats”. Antelope species range from kudu, gemsbok and the large and stately eland, to the diminutive Damara dik-dik. Smaller mammals include jackal, bat-eared fox, honey badger, warthog and the ubiquitous ground squirrel. About 340 bird species occur in the park. For the greater part of the year, in the dry season, Etosha’s mammals and birds are dependent on about 30 springs and waterholes. These provide excellent game viewing and photographic opportunities. Etosha’s vegetation varies from dwarf shrub savannah and grasslands, which occur around the pan, to throughout the park.

Eighty per cent of all Etosha’s trees are mopane. (Transfer to Mushara Lodge). Embark on a private Game Drive into Etosha Game Reserve with Special Safari Guide. (Duration +_ 4hours). Lunch break at Mushara Lodge. In the afternoon we continue our flight via Tsumeb to refuel and then via Vingerklip Mountain, down - stream Ugab River to the Skeleton Coast, coastwise passing colonies of Cape Fur seals at Cape Cross, Saltpans and back to Swakopmund
